Spicy Black Bean Burgers are made with mashed black beans, a blend of herbs and spices, peppers, and corn kernels. They are shaped and dusted with a little flour to create a crust on the burger, then fried in a skillet with a little oil.
These are excellent for slider sized sandwiches. They can be enjoyed piled with your favorite toppings, but I personally love these on a toasted slider roll with a pile of homemade garlic dill pickles!
How I came upon this Black Bean Burger Recipe
I used belong to a cooking forum that was a group of friends I had made online that loved to make and share recipes. One of those members shared this Black Bean Burger Recipe and after I tried it, I knew I had to blog it.
I asked if I could publish her recipe here and was given permission. However, over the years I developed the recipe to lean include more of the flavors that we love. This black bean burger is so delicious with just the right amount of spice to it and has become a family favorite that we all enjoy often.
What You Need To Make This Recipe
Canned Black Beans
Fresh Oregano
Fresh Cilantro
Garlic Cloves
Red Bell Pepper
Jalapeno Peppers
Frozen Corn
Bread Crumbs
Chili Powder: I love the dark chili powder the best and I use this brand.
Cumin Powder: Cumin give this black bean burger the distinct flavor that I love. If you can't tolerate cumin (or cilantro flavors), it is ok to leave this out. This is the brand I use.
Tips and Substitutions
- Drain and rinse the black beans before using
- Use a potato masher (I recommend a potato masher like this one) to mash the black beans. Mash them enough to allow them to start breaking down, but not into a paste
- Use 1 teaspoon dried oregano for the fresh oregano
- If you want to keep it lower fat, use cooking spray in place of the olive oil
- Substitute fresh corn kernels for the frozen corn.
Serving Suggestions
- Make your own flavored mayonnaise to serve over top of these Spicy Black Bean Burgers. Mix ¼ mayonnaise to 1-2 teaspoons horseradish for a creamy horseradish mayonnaise.
- Serve like you would a regular burger topped with pickles, lettuce, tomato, and ketchup.
- Use the Black Bean Burger as a base for a spicy eggs benedict.
- Make black bean burger tacos!

I'm glad your family enjoyed them! I have had them topped with a Mango Salsa that took them over the top for me. The sweet and heat together compliment really well. To make a mango salsa, chop two mangos, 1 jalapeno pepper, 1/4 cup finely diced red onion, juice of 1 lime (use two if the lime is not real juicy), and about 1/4 cup chopped cilantro. Yum!

Mmmm - yummy! These look a lot like a black bean cake that I make. Mine have cilantro and corn meal in them and are dredged in the corn meal too instead of flour - I might try the flour the next time and see if it makes them any crispier. Maybe a flour/cornmeal mix!
