These Valentine Sugar Cookies are a soft baked heart shaped cookie that is decorated with a glace icing. They are a delicious sweet treat that are fun to make and give to your favorite valentine.
Heart Shaped Cookies For Valentine's Day
While theses Valentine Sugar Cookies are a little bit time consuming to make, they are worth every bit of time it takes to see the look on the faces of the loved ones these are shared with. This recipe is quite easy to follow, just give yourself a few extra hours to make these.
These cookies are great to make ahead of time. They can be put in the freezer with our without the glaze topping. If freezing them with the glaze, be sure to separate layers with a piece of wax paper.
You don't have to be an artist to make these valentine's day cookies either! To decorate, a heart line is piped around the shape of the cookie, then it is flooded with filling to cover the top. I pipe the first layer on all of the cookies first. Then I make little dots around the cookie and drag a toothpick through the dots to make a heart shape on top of the glaze.
Making An Icing Glace Without Meringue Powder
If you are like me, you likely don't have meringue powder on hand. Meringue powder is made mostly from dried egg whites. It is used when making meringue, frosting, or royal icings. I don't have a beef with meringue powder, I just never have it on hand.
I have found that using powdered sugar, corn syrup, and milk does the exact same trick, and I don't have to buy a special ingredient just to make an icing that will decorate my valentine sugar cookies.

Tips and Substitutions
- Don't roll the cookie dough too thin. You want the cookie to be thick and sturdy.
- Add ¼ teaspoon of almond or cherry extract in the glace icing to add a little bit of flavor.
- Use a piping bag to outline the cookie. No tip is needed, just cut a small piece off the tip of the piping bag and draw the lines.
- Always outline the cookie first. Then flood the cookie with glace the cookie.
- Allow the glaced cookie to set for at least 2 hours, until it is dry to the touch. Once it is dry to the touch, it is time to add the 2nd layer of glace. I like to do small dots of icing around the cookie. Then take a toothpick and drag it from the top of the heart and around through each dot, making a heart shape in the glace.
- Make the glace up to 5 days prior to baking the cookies. Keep it in the refrigerator in sealed bags. Just knead the bag before piping the glace onto the cookie.
- Freeze the cookies with a layer of wax paper in between cookie layers. Be sure the cookie glace is completely dried before stacking the valentine sugar cookies.
- Add ½ teaspoon of cinnamon to the cookie dough for a spicy sugar cookie.
- Substitute Greek yogurt for the sour cream.
