❤️ Why you'll love it
- It is an easy dinner recipe for classic comfort food.
- This delicious salisbury steak is rich in flavor but low in calories/
- The entire recipe is made on the stove top in one dish meaning less mess to clean up.
- It's a bunless burger covered in rich brown gravy that even picky eaters will love.
🥘 Ingredients
Lean ground beef: choose a low fat blend of meat to fat ratio, my preference is 85/15.
Butter: just a small amount is used and added for flavor
Onion and garlic cloves: adds flavor to the meat and gravy. I like to use diced onions but fans of large onion pieces in the gravy can slice them.
Button mushrooms: I prefer the baby button mushrooms and halve them, however a regular sized mushroom will work, they will need to be sliced.
Beef stock and dry red wine: the red wine adds extra flavor to the gravy, but you can stick with all beef broth if preferred.
All-purpose flour: the flour is used as a thickening agent in the gravy recipe.
Red wine vinegar: for a splash of acid as a flavor enhancer.
🔪 Instructions
- In a large bowl combine onion, pepper, salt, garlic, and ground beef. Shape meat mixture into 4 (½-inch-thick) oval patties.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Coat with cooking spray and add patties, cooking for 3 minutes on each side, or until browned. Remove from skillet and set aside.
- Melt butter in same large skillet. Add mushrooms and sauté 4 minutes, until softened and water has released. Stir in red wine and cook 2 minutes.
- In a large measuring cup, combine beef broth and flour. Add to skillet, whisking constantly, bringing the gravy to a boil.
- Reduce heat to medium and cook 5 minutes or until gravy has thickened. Add salisbury steak patties and vinegar to the skillet and cook 2 minutes longer. Serve hot.

📖 Variations
- Substitute your preferred ground meat for the beef. Good choices would be ground turkey or chicken.

💭 Tips
- If gravy is not thick enough for your tastes, mix together 1 tablespoon cold water and 2 teaspoons cornstarch until cornstarch has dissolved. Whisk into the gravy and cook for 1 minute, until gravy thickens more.
- This is a great for meal prep! Place cooked hamburger patties and gravy in a freezer safe and oven safe container and freeze up to 3 months. To heat, remove from freezer and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes, until meat patties are warmed through and gravy is bubbly.

🏫 The Last Word
I because curious about where this recipe originated and went on a mission to discover that it is an American dish created by Dr. James Henry Salisbury during the Civil War as a way to combat digestion issues of soldiers. It later became a popular frozen tv dinner that you could buy in individual servings or family sized.

Shelby,
I would use the red wine and beef broth also, the wine adds so much to the overall flavor profile of the gravy.
