Fresh broccoli florets and fresh cauliflower florets, these make up the bulk of the salad and contrasting color, not to mention providing plenty of fiber and vitamin c to the diet.
Thick cut bacon, adds protein and flavor.
Red onion, gives a nice color contrast and adds flavor.
Sharp cheddar cheese is what I prefer and what most recipes use however any of your favorite cheeses can be used here.
Mayonnaise, I go with all mayonnaise and dilute it with some acid by using lemon juice.
Lemon juice, add the tang to the salad
Sugar will sweeten the dressing for the salad but can be omitted if you want a more savory salad.

📖 Variations
- To make this a low carb keto recipe, substitute the sugar for your choice of sugar substitute.
- Substitute apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar for the lemon juice.
- Stir in a small amount of sunflower seeds and dried cranberries or red bell pepper to add more color.
- Use a mixture of low-fat greek yogurt or sour cream with the mayonnaise to lighten up the salad and give it a little more tang.
- Sprinkle some green onion tops and a little more crispy bacon on top of the salad.
- If you prefer a less sweet salad, then add less sugar or leave it out entirely.
💭 Tips
- If raw broccoli and cauliflower is something you don't care for, you can blanch the vegetables to make it more palatable and easier on the stomach. Just place the veggies in 2 quarts of water that is at a rolling boil. Cook for 1 minute. Immediately remove the veggies from the water and place in an ice cold water bath to shock and prevent them from cooking further. This will soften the vegetables up some and allow it to retain their color and not become soggy.

🏫 The last word
This recipe does not use a whole head of broccoli or cauliflower (not even when doubling up on the recipe). When menu planning, I recommend planning another meal using those vegetables as a side dish during the week or keep in the fridge with some dip, ready for snacking.
I could not come up with why this recipe is called Amish anywhere on the internet. The only thing I can maybe think of would be the fact it is a sweet salad as Amish Potato Salad and Amish Macaroni Salad also have a sweet dressing.
